Healthier Food - Investigating Ingredients Workshops
Last week, staff from Chartwells, our school catering company, came in to school to visit Reception and KS1 to take a closer look at the food we eat, where it comes from and the benefits it brings to our lives. They discussed with the children the benefits of going back to basics, using simple, fresh ingredients to discover the joys of real food.
Pupils looked at The Very Hungry Caterpillar story book where they learned that eating too many foods like cake and ice cream can make us feel unwell but, by eating a range of fruits and vegetables, the caterpillar grew into a beautiful butterfly.
The children then took part in the food art challenge creating a Caterpillar or Butterfly using different fruits and vegetables. Then they encouraged each other to try the different fruits and vegetables, all of them tried something new that they had never eaten before that day.
Pupils said "Cucumber is my favourite but I also like the spinach - I've never had that before!" and 'Kiwi and pineapple are my new favourite fruits; I'm going to tell my Mum!"
